Much of what Diane Gossen created in restitution is rooted in indigenous practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is belief based not rule based and\nbelieves that mistakes are opportunities to learn and grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone is trying to do the right\nthing and has the desire to make things right.  You look inside for\nthe answers. The students will figure it out. We don\u2019t seek to find\nfault with others. We accept human frailty as a human condition.\nSelf-discipline is being responsible for your own behavior and\nlearning from it. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We believe in:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Reaching consensus and involving all community members in dialogue. <\/li><li>Reconciliation and restitution rather than punishment. <\/li><li>In treating people with mutual dignity and respect. <\/li><li>Focusing on the wider reasons (the needs) and not blaming anyone. <\/li><li>Restoring harmony through learning and healing. <\/li><li>Encouraging independence rather than conformity. <\/li><li>In self restitution or self-evaluation for inner growth and healing. (The answers come from within) <\/li><li>It takes a community to raise a child <\/li><li>In teaching about belonging, mastery, generosity and independence <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>An Indigenous grandmother\u2019s description of a Winnipeg restitution school<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWhen my son started at your school he had already had a challenging journey.
